A driving mechanism of near-wall turbulence subject to adverse pressure gradient in a plane Couette flow

چکیده
The effect of adverse pressure gradient (APG) on near-wall turbulence is studied, with a particular attention to the production mechanism. A plane turbulent Couette flow considered for several values constant APG in lower wall region. direct numerical simulation (DNS) large computational domain shows that near continues exist even at sufficiently APGs. On increasing APG, cross-streamwise intensities increase, and streaks gradually disappear. linear analysis using optimal transient growth indicates inhibits generation due significant reduction mean shear region wall. fluctuation dynamics beyond regime studied DNS minimal unit. self-sustaining process involving significantly weakened or destroyed as increases, while fluctuations become more isotropic localised. Using conditional averaging analysis, new mechanism under strong uncovered. This initiated by wall-normal nonlinear transport an outer velocity transported subsequently amplified via Orr mechanism, resulting non-zero spatially localised vortical structures. also confirmed domain, where correlation between observed.

A streamwise constant model of turbulence in plane Couette flow
Streamwise and quasi-streamwise elongated structures have been shown to play a significant role in turbulent shear flows. We model the mean behaviour of fully turbulent plane Couette flow using a streamwise constant projection of the Navier– Stokes equations. This results in a two-dimensional three-velocity-component (2D/3C) model. We first use a steady-state version of the model to demonstrate...
متن کاملThe dynamics of transition to turbulence in plane Couette flow
In plane Couette flow, the incompressible fluid between two plane parallel walls is driven by the motion of those walls. The laminar solution, in which the streamwise velocity varies linearly in the wall-normal direction, is known to be linearly stable at all Reynolds numbers (Re). Yet, in both experiments and computations, turbulence is observed for Re & 360. In this article, we show that when...
متن کاملLow-speed streak instability in near wall turbulence with adverse pressure gradient
A direct numerical simulation of a turbulent channel flow with a lower curved wall is performed at Reynolds number Reτ ≈ 600. Low-speed streak structures are extracted from the turbulent flow field and base flows formed with conditional streaks averages, superimposing the mean streamwise velocity profile, are used for linear stability analyses. The instability in the presence of a strong pressu...
متن کاملSubcritical transition to turbulence in plane Couette flow.
Various experiments have outlined generic properties of the subcritical transition to turbulence in plane Couette flow. A low order model of a self-sustaining process has been derived by Waleffe [11] from the Navier-Stokes equations for a sinusoidal shear flow. This paper investigates the weakly non-linear properties and the phase space analysis of this model, including the dependence on the mo...
متن کاملModeling the Transition to Turbulence in Plane Couette Flow
Numerical simulations of a model of plane Couette flow focusing on its in-plane spatio-temporal properties are used to study the dynamics of turbulent spots. While the core of a spot is filled with small scale velocity fluctuations, a large scale flow extending far away and occupying the full gap between the driving plates is revealed upon filtering out small scales. It is characterized by stre...
